As I sit in this motel room 35 miles south of Chicago, a thousand miles away from my home, I am filled with gratitude for the geeky traditions that have brought me here. The literal definition of 'geek' refers to someone who is socially awkward or introverted, but to me, it means so much more.

Just after midnight on Thanksgiving Eve, I achieved my first online kill ever in an old version of Doom. With the cheat controls turned on, I couldn't be killed, and I armed myself with a Number Six Laser Blaster to take down some slow-moving commandos clad in sleeveless T-shirts. This victory inspired me to reflect on all the ways I am grateful for geeks.

This Thanksgiving, I found myself far from home, visiting two young friends who had traveled across the country with just $10 extra bucks to spare, seeking good computer jobs. As we spent our holiday together, I was reminded of the many reasons why I cherish geek culture.

One of the most significant benefits is the sense of community that it provides. Geeks often find themselves outside the mainstream social circle, but within their own niche, they form strong bonds with like-minded individuals. Whether online or in person, geeks come together to share knowledge, passions, and interests, creating a supportive network that transcends geographical boundaries.

This skillset has far-reaching implications, from finding innovative solutions in science and technology to developing new business models and strategies.
